ALIS, what is it?

Active Line Impedance Stabilizer


Schaffner’s new ALIS is designed to improve power line communication between the public power grid and the smart meter. It introduces a signal barrier between the smart meter and the household. The household installation will not affect the smart meter’s communication.

In a world-wide trend, city-developers are transforming their infrastructure into smart grids. In smart cities the power distribution shall be more flexible. Before, the energy distribution was linear; big power stations were producing energy, it was transferred over a power grid and consumers were using the power. With the introduction of solar power, a consumer can become a producer and sell electricity. To keep up with this development, smart energy grids can help to organize the new distribution of electrical energy.

In a first step into this direction, 15-minute snapshots of consumption are transmitted once per 24 hours to the network planners. This gives a good impression of, what is happening in what part of the network.


Automated meter reading is key

The electro-mechanical energy meters have been replaced with so called “smart meters”. These meters are monitored via automated meter reading (AMR). Service technicians no longer need site visits, but can get the logs remotely. If it is done every day, it enables a grid operator to predict usage scenarios and to integrate decentralized green power more easily.

The communication with the infrastructure can be done via different methods, e.g. 3G / 4G, RF and power line communication (PLC).

The advantage of PLC is a good reception in basements, where meters are installed and radio methods don't work. Also, no communication fees are needed for PLC and the hardware is inexpensive.

In the near future, the networks shall transmit their current consumption data every 15 minutes. This will give a real-time impression of the power grid. A reliable communication is vital to provide this service level. In some cases, the signals are more likely to to be absorbed locally, rather than being transmitted back to the public grid. This is due to a local lower impedance at the transmitted PL frequencies.


However, the power grid was not designed as communication network, therefore the transfer capabilities are not as predictable as in a dedicated communication network. Due to the nature of the network, the power line communication also goes to the direction of the house. At times, the communication signal is more likely to flow into the direction of the house, rather the direction of the grid.

ALIS can repair the communication

In cases, when the communication is disturbed by defective devices (noise) or machines with low impedances, e.g. Solar inverters or lifts, the LIS can help to re-establish the communication.


Application: Clean-up process after smart meter roll-out.

ALIS are typically used by grid operators to improve PLC after a smart meter roll-out. If the smart meter cannot be reached and the reason is a noise or low impedance problem on the customer side, the ALIS is the device of choice. The ALIS will clean-up the frequency range at the smart meter for more reliable power line communication. It supports G3, as well as other CENELEC A band standards.
